Schulich professor nominated for Business Professor of the Year by the Economist Intelligence Unit

Andre Kuzmicki, Executive Director of the Program in Real Estate and Infrastructure at the Schulich School of Business, has been nominated for the Business Professor of the Year Award by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) and supported by Hult International Business School. The award aims to recognize and reward the professors that have challenged, influenced and inspired students in business education.

Students and alumni from all over the world submitted their nominations for the business professor who inspired, challenged and guided them through their business education. The winning professor will win US $100,000. The deadline to vote for Professor Kuzmicki is Friday, November 23rd at 5:00 pm GMT.

Here is the nomination submitted on behalf of Prof. Kuzmicki:

In my 7 years of higher education so far, I can think of no one more deserving of the EIU Business Professor of the Year award than Andre Kuzmicki, Executive Director of the Program in Real Estate and Infrastructure at the Schulich School of Business, York University. He exemplifies every characteristic a memorable Professor should have: unbridled enthusiasm for the subject matter; industry connections and expertise that ensure current, “real world” issues are at the forefront of the classroom; and a truly unique teaching style that keeps every student engaged.

What differentiates him as a Professor is his unwavering goal of building an enduring community amongst the undergraduate and graduate students, alumni and faculty in Schulich’s Program in Real Estate and Infrastructure. Having served as past President of NAIOP’s Toronto Chapter, and with a long and industrious career in real estate, Andre is well-known in the Greater Toronto Area’s real estate industry.

But despite how very busy he continues to be, Andre always has time for tea with students and alumni to discuss real estate, careers and life in general. He is an inspiration to all students who have had the pleasure of being in the “hot seat” of his witty lectures, and for that reason I am proud to nominate him for the EIU Business Professor of the Year award.

Professor Kuzmicki’s career in real estate spans nearly four decades and encompasses all aspects of real estate investment, including acquisitions, development, asset management and portfolio management. Prior to launching his teaching career in 1998, he managed the real estate investment portfolio for the Canadian arm of the Prudential Insurance Company of America. He is an experienced corporate director and REIT trustee, currently serving on the boards of Chartwell Seniors Housing REIT, Dorsay Development Corporation and RealNet Canada Inc.

In addition to teaching at Schulich, Andre is Adjunct Professor of Real Estate Development at the Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation, Columbia University. He is a past president of the National Association of Office and Industrial Properties (NAIOP), Greater Toronto Chapter and is the founding chairman of its prestigious annual REX Awards and Gala.

Andre is a past winner of the Seymour Schulich Teaching Excellence Award. He is a NAIOP Distinguished Fellow and a member of the Urban Land Institute and the Pension Real Estate Association. He holds a BA and an MBA from McGill University.

The deadline to vote for Professor Kuzmicki is Friday, November 23rd at 5:00 pm GMT.

The 15 professors with the most votes will be judged by an expert panel of judges from around the world who will select four professors to travel to London to take part in a live Teach-off on Thursday, March 14, 2013.

The judges will be looking for professors that have gone above and beyond to help their students on the path to future success, and identifying the teaching qualities that will help the next generation of leaders address the world’s challenges with ever more agility, independent thought and imagination.

The panel is comprised of William Ridgers, Business Education Editor, The Economist; Peter Felix, President, The Association of Executive Search Consultants; Astrid Tuminez, former Vice-Dean of Executive Education, National University of Singapore; John Beck, Managing Director, Hult Labs; and Adrian Wooldridge, Management Editor, The Economist.

Adrian Wooldridge comments: “The EIU are delighted to launch this prestigious award in a bid to recognize the professors that have made a significant difference to student’s educational success. The international award will reveal the unique qualities shared by the most successful professors, and help understand what underpins outstanding teaching that prepares students for today’s challenging working environment.”

The four professors participating in the “Teach-off” will each plan and present a short lecture on a topic of their choice, which they will then deliver to a live classroom audience. They should aim to ‘wow’ students both in the room and those watching live online. All viewers (in the room and online) will then cast their vote to decide who will be the EIU Business Professor of the Year. Votes will be calculated electronically and the results announced live. The winning professor will be presented with a prize of US $100,000. For those interested in viewing the teach-off, full registration details will be announced soon; you can pre-register here.

President Dr. Stephen Hodges, Hult International Business School said: “We are pleased to be working with the EIU in search for professors with the ability to energize a new generation of managers.” He added, “We need managers that can effectively and creatively deal with the issues arising from today’s fast-paced business world, and professors who have proven methods for teaching the next generation of leaders.”
